   The Transparent Ranking of Open Access (OA) Repositories has been published annually since 2008 as part of the Webometrics Portal of Rankings (webometrics.info). This edition evaluates the repositories based on the total number of items indexed by Google Scholar (excluding citations) during the third week of March 2026). There are 5 independent lists including all repositories, institutional repositories, portals, CRIS, data reposiortories and repositories from Spain.   The milestone highlights the growing importance of open citation metadata in advancing scientific discovery. Around half of Crossref's citation links are contributed directly by member organizations through metadata deposits, while the remainder are generated through automated reference matching, demonstrating the combined impact of community collaboration and technological innovation. By expanding access to interconnected research, Crossref continues to improve discoverability, enable more comprehensive bibliometric analyses, and help researchers build on existing knowledge more effectively.

This year's release covers 22,643 journals from 113 countries and regions across 254 research categories, with 521 journals receiving a Journal Impact Factor (JIF) for the first time. In some departments, staffing levels have been reduced severalfold following restructuring measures, while teaching, according to participants, is being transformed into a “minimally viable product.” Respondents also recount cases of colleagues crying at work, experiencing chronic stress, and even discussing suicide during internal departmental meetings. 
   The central argument of the article is that the British higher education system is undergoing a deep moral and institutional crisis. Many experienced scholars acknowledge that they once valued academia and built successful careers within it; however, they now perceive current developments as undermining the very idea of the university.
